The Logan County Commission took a big step forward Tuesday with the announcement Tuesday that rescued animals in Logan County will soon be housed in a new shelter.

The new shelter will be built at Three Mile Curve and will be a 30 foot by 50 foot facility with 5 foot by 40 foot sheds that will allow for exterior dog runs.

The County Commissioners have worked with the W.V. Humane Society for some time in planning this project.

Summer Wyatt, state director of The Humane Society, attended the announcement and said she is proud of the steps Logan County is taking to improve the conditions of the animals housed in the shelter.

“This is such a spectacular step forward and I hope other counties see this and are inspired to do the same,” said Wyatt. “I know the commissioners are going above and beyond the call of duty and going the extra step is not always the easiest. I hope people appreciate what they are doing. I am so happy and thrilled at this announcement.”

Logan County Commission President Danny Godby said the commission has made every effort to take care of the animals and give them the best facility possible.

“We want to have a better situation than what we have had before,” said Godby. “Safety is a concern and we want to make access to the shelter easier for people who want to come in to adopt the animals. We want to see these animals thrive and we want a good environment for them. We want to have an animal shelter that people can be proud of.”

Godby said the facility will have a heating and cooling system to keep the animals comfortable. He said the county will also be hiring a secretary to handle day-to-day business while the shelter officials are out in the county.

“We want this to be a plus for Logan County,” Godby said.

Commissioners Willie Akers and Danny Ellis said the project has their full support.

“This is great for the county,” said Akers.

“It is easy to support things that are good for Logan County,” said Ellis.

County Humane Officer Jerry Browning said people have recently been coming from as far away as Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York and Florida to adopt animals from the current shelter and he hopes the improved conditions and accessibility will increase the number of animals placed in good homes.

“I’m thankful to get a better facility for the animals,” Browning said. “This is not only about the animals; this is also about the people, too. We recently had 30 dogs adopted in one week and we have 18 dogs ready to go out to a place in Kentucky. We want these animals to find a good home.”

If anyone is interested, animals are still dying cruel deaths and being mistreated because of the employees and the lack of action by the Commission. A new building is going to be like a bandage, it will just cover up what's really going on. Changes need to be made to what is going on NOW! You have two employees who don't even like animals in charge of the pound, and are afraid of big dogs! We take tons of new food, treats and toys and they won't even give it to them. They say why waste food on animals they are going to put to death anyway. Everyone needs to know what is going on at the pound. A change needs to be made!

Huge thank you to S.A.F.E. Without your efforts, this new building would only remain a dream to many. Did those, in the article, who traveled from RI, NJ, NY, & FL to adopt actually reach someone at the pound or was this also through the relentless efforts of S.A.F.E.? Summer Wyatt, as WV Humane Society Director, have you been inside the facility to check on the "humane" welfare of these animals? If so, & you approved, a new Director needs to be put in place. The new facility will look great as does the above article to those who turn a blind eye or don't know the truth about the cruel, inhumane, & neglectful treatment of these animals. It doesn't matter what it looks like on the outside, it's what's being allowed on the inside that ultimately matters. There will not be success for Logan unless & until there is cooperation on their behalf to allow volunteers inside to nurture, feed, water, walk, clean, show them love, socialize these animals, & be there to showcase these deserving lives to possible adopters. Volunteers would be able to work with Rescues, especially those who have been deemed by the pound to be dangerous & Rescue only. They can't rescue if they can't make contact. What a lonely, isolated life these animals must endure. We are the voice for the voiceless & we're urgently requesting that you allow volunteers inside, now, to help & assist in the care, adoption, & rescue of these precious, deserving lives and watch miracles happen. If this doesn't occur, many will take it as a message that you advocate the unethical treatment of animals. You obviously need assistance, with only two workers, so please graciously accept the volunteer's offers. Now that would make for a great front page story! By the way, I've seen some comments that a few years back, Logan was awarded $75,000 toward a "No Kill Shelter". Is that the plans with the new facility? The money is still there, right? Well if not, the audit trail should clearly state where this money was spent should the awarding agency happen to request it.

How long has The Logan Couny Commission been in place? Why hasn't there been new housing for the animals before now? Not because of the Commission, they could care less, just like the two they employee to work at the pound. The only reason anything has gotten done is because of SAFE, that is why the animals are finding homes, in and out of WV. Do you really think that anyone on the Commission or the two employees have travelled to take these animals to new homes? No way. There attitude has been I don't see it, it doesn't happen. They have never cared about the animals. SAFE has made them look like the criminals they are. They have let animals be tortured for years and now they are taking credit for what someone else has done. Politics = Logan!

Why is it that one person is making the decision as to when the volunteers can enter the shelter? The volunteers can make life easier for the officers, not to mention how the lives of the animals would be improved. Is there a board of directors? Also, if there's only 2 employees, they SHOULD NOT BE family members. Who do they answer to?

To the County Commission and others posing for this picture, have you been to the shelter lately? Have you checked on the condition of the animals?

The fact that SAFE wasn't mentioned in this article speaks volumes. This is a new day, people, the kind of abuse that is going on can't be concealed in this world of information sharing.

To the County Commission: It's time to take RESPONSIBILITY for what is happening in that shelter. By not taking responsibility, you're allowing abuse and neglect to happen, and in case you haven't noticed, some good people are paying attention. Good will prevail!!

Hey Lucky, why don't you go down to the nearest river and jump in it! The Logan Banner reserves the right to post or not post anything I say. I don't find your posts very interesting or enlightening as well. Did it ever occur to you that I sometimes say things tongue-in-cheek? This was meant to be tongue-in-cheek (I was joking). Whether or not you understand my humor is not my problem. I've seen people who wear their shorts 10 sizes too small, but you take the cake. If you don't like what I post, the smart thing to do would be to not read my posts. Do you understand what I saying? Only an idiot would keep reading my posts if they didn't like them. Gosh...are you so deprived you read things you don't like? Go to a movie...get out once in awhile...get a life...PLEASE! Other than the things I said above, you seem like a nice person. I would appreciate it if you would keep your comments to yourself. I won't address you anymore (unless you keep saying nasty things about me.) I get it: you don't like what I say, but I am going to comment on anything I want; and I respect you enough to let you speak your opinion.

Very good decision, county commission. Would be great to see all groups now come together and cooperate to save more animals. Love the idea of a secretary/receptionaist being at the facility because right now it's virtually impossible to reach anyone at the shelter. Makes adoption very difficult. Must be a lot of calls in Logan County because I've never seen a place so hard to reach.

The situation won't improve unless everyone commits to working together.

The lady standing beside Willie is pretty nice to lood at! As for the animals, Jerry might consider hiring Obama after the election as dog catcher. I heard obama said dogs are his favorite in many ways. Um...Um...U...

Dr. Pepper, I've told you to grow up before. You sound foolish. Your making innappropriate comments on every subject. People are getting sick of it. Please consider how you sound to others.

I read the article and then the comments and wanted to commend the Logan County Commission and Dog Pound for doing this for our stray pets. Also, would like to commend the Safe organization for their work in finding the dogs and cats homes and posting their pictures online. It is very nice to have people here finally taking action to help our stray/abandoned animals. I would hope that we could all work together. The bickering and negativity only reflects badly on those doing it. You don't have to tell us what you're doing, we can see it for ourselves. It's going to take everyone working together to make it better. If not, people will lose interest, get fed up and turn away. Please try to get along for the sake of the animals.

The people who care do not give up, lose interest or turn away. S.A.F.E. did not need the credit. they needed the agreements to be honored that was given to them by the Logan County Commission. There would be no new Pound if the group had not worked so hard to convince them to build it. It is hard to work with people who lie.

I love these people who will stand in front of a camera or news crew and talk about how much they have done when they have done nothing. How inappropriate the group that has saved over 700 animals from the pound was not invited to the meeting where they announced the "NEW POUND." You can call it a shelter all you want, if you do not care about the animals the most you can hope for is a cleaner environment for the animals to die in. We fought for these animals lives every minute of every day, but still the county commission gives us no recognition and actually is taking credit for all our hard work. It makes me physically ill to think that any animal's life is in the hands of these people.

Well done, Logan County Commission! Thank you for caring for these animals who haven't been fortunate enough to have found their furever home (yet). My hope is that other counties will see what you're doing and they will follow suit. Again, well done and thanks for caring!

It is a shame that there is no mention of the S.A.F.E. group who are the ones getting all these dogs adopted/rescued out...There the ones to foster the animals until help is on the way..There the ones to set up and do the transports...All volunteered with no help finacially other than the fundraisers that they coordinate and work...Yet the pound is the one that gets all the recogonition????? Terribly, terribly something wrong with this picture..

Im sorry. But you have no reason to build a pound if you are going to leave the same problem to be moved over to the new pound. This community has a strange way of showing its thanks to all the hard work that the volunteers are doing .

this makes me so mad while im so happy we are getting a new pound why has the S.A.F.E. group being ignored they are the only reason people are coming from all over to adopted and S.A.F.E. has been the one arranging resues they were even awarded home town hero but not mentioned in the article because they have been the voice of the dogs in the pound and are not going away

THanks to the rescue group SAFE which I am a member of - people are coming from all over - the pound would have never even been noticed it if weren't for the facebook page and multiple animals that we ahve been able to save - Summer has only been in town 3 times that I am aware of while SAFE members work countless hours to save a total of over 700 animals in less than a year - our sweat and tears and hardwork raising the money to save these animals because the county commission has not given us a dime - most of our volunteers have spent many hours away from their family and jobs and hundreds of dollars of their own money and yet our group is not receiving any recognition for this - lets not forget that we recently were awarded hometown heros for our work in removing 47 hoarder dogs from a home in Yuma - thank you county commission for proving to us that you are as worthless and caniving as everyone in Logan has suspected you to be for years.

Stacy, would should the County Commission fund a "Volunteer" group? This is volunteer work that YOU and everyone within the group are choosing to do without being compensated. Thank You to the County Commission for choosing to build a new facility.

The county commission funded a haunted maze and a zombie walk and that is all volunteer. We don't want anything from the county commission. We have did everything by ourselves this long, what would we need them for now. They are posers, posing like they care.

@Mr. Browning, These volunteers make your job easier, can't you see that? You're collecting your paycheck while they're busting their buts doing YOUR job. Cruelty doesn't go unpunished.

The county comission would not have been able to "CHOSE" to build a new facility had it not been for the rescue numbers obtained from the SAFE group - I am proud of who I am and what I stand for and I did chose this - I know who I am and I sleep very well at night knowing I save the animals. The cc ultimately donates money to several volunteer groups in this county - example - zombiewalk - anyway - we would rather work for our money - we are not afraid of a little hard work.
