The tournament drew more than 150 teams in the different age divisions.
In Logan’s age group there were more than 30 teams that were split into two divisions, Logan coach Mike Tothe said.
In the first game of the tournament Logan fell behind early to Carroll County from Hillsville, Va., trailing 23-12 at the half.
Logan trailed by as many as 18 points early in the second half before the hot shooting of Hannah Tothe and Shayna Gore brought them back.
Tothe and Gore combined for 23 points in the second half to help cut the 18-point deficit to four with over a minute to go before running out of gas and falling 49-44.
Tothe led Logan with 18 points, while Gore tallied 14.
Kelsey Kirk chipped in seven points, Hannah Kolovich had three points and Aly Browning added two. “Kelsey and Katie Kirk did an outstanding job in the post guarding a really big and physical player from Carroll County,” Tothe said.
In the second game of the day Logan squared off against the Cary Cardinals from Cary, N.C.
Cary established control of the game from the tip and led throughout playing tight man-to-man defense.
“Our shots were not falling,” Coach Tothe said. “They played as good a defensive game against us as anybody we have played. There were not a whole lot of open looks for our shooters.”
Browning led Logan with nine points. Gore had five, Jenna Kimler four and Kolovich two.
The next game of the day saw Logan defeat Carroll County in a rematch.
Logan led throughout the game and controlled the boards.
“Our big girls – Jenna Kimler, Kelsey Kirk, Katie Kirk and Hannah Kolovich – did a nice job controlling the boards,” Coach Tothe said. “Rebounding has been the thorn in our side so far this season. We have good size and we play hard but for whatever reason we lose the rebound battle.”
On Sunday morning, Logan battled with the Lady Katz from King, N.C.
Logan and King battled to a first half tie.
“In the second half King tried to apply full court pressure and we were able to execute our press break to perfection,” Tothe said. “Betsy Lukacs, Jess Lester and Aly Browning did a nice job of breaking down the pressure and scoring on various layups.”
Gore ripped the nets for a team high 23 points in a 63-46 win.
Lukacs finished with 12 points, Browning had eight, Lester eight, Tothe six, Kimler five, Kirk four and Kolovich four.
The win advanced the Logan All-Stars team into the championship game against the Lady Cougars from Charlotte, N.C., where Logan lost 54-38.
The Lady Cougars finished third in the AAU Division II National Tournament last year according to Tothe.
“We came out flat, with no intensity and only trailed 21-20 at the half,” Coach Tothe said. “I thought at halftime I could get the girls focused on what we needed to do to win, however, their inside play was too strong and we let an early second half lead slip away before falling.”
Gore led Logan in scoring with 13 points.
Hannah Tothe chipped in nine points, while Browning had six, Lester four, Kirk four, Kimler two and Kolovich two.
“Our girls played decent throughout the weekend against some good competition,” Coach Tothe said. “We just need to keep working harder and improve from game to game. Getting a couple of wins in these big tournaments is pretty good considering all of our girls go to one school and are not hand picked like most of the AAU programs.”
The Logan AAU team plays at Bluefield this coming weekend and will host the Logan Madness Girls Basketball Tournament in Logan, March 26-29.
