An explosion followed by black smoke filling the sky brought firefighters to the City View area in Logan to battle another fire set intentionally.

The house targeted yesterday had been vacant for a number of years. According to Fire Chief Scott Beckett, this area has declined over the past 20 years and there have been several incidents of arson over the past five years. The fire marshall’s office and fire department have been working together to identify the parties responsible and prevent future fires.

“The worst thing about intentional fires is the risk of injury or death.” said Beckett. “Not only are residents in nearby homes at risk, our firefighters put their lives on the line every time they respond to a call.”

A four wheeler was spotted leaving the scene at the time of the fire and several names of suspects have been submitted to the state police and fire marshall.

Chief Beckett encourages the public to help in solving the arson problems in Logan. Any information regarding arson can be reported anonymously by calling the Arson Hotline at 1-800-233-FIRE (3473).

Some things never change. Vacant houses having been going up in flames during the Halloween season for decades. Usually homes are spotted on and planned weeks ahead of time. Fire departments around southern WV would be foolish not to be on alert for these.
