Town Attorney Dan Dahill had some good news for the West Logan council on March 9.

Dahill said the town may be getting some help soon on a longtime problem.

For months West Logan (and the city of Logan) has been plagued by the problem of dilapidated abandoned buildings that have gone from eyesores to rat infested health and safety problems.

Now, the Logan County Commission is looking into ways to help the municipalities with getting rid of these ramshackle structures. Dahill told Councilmembers that he was told to get a letter from the town of West Logan prepared with the lot numbers of four run down shacks and submit it to the Logan County Commission and ask for their help in tearing them down and hauling them off.

"They want to dispose of these things as part of a county clean up," Dahill said.

Town Clerk Kristi Adkins said Mayor Darren Akers had a list of the worst four or five structures, several of which, ironically, are down the road on a hillside not far from town hall.

Adkins asked Dahill how the structures, some of which are half burnt down, and others of which are falling down, would be removed if they were still owned.

Dahill said it might be possible the county could declare them condemned and tear them down and file a lien on the assets of property owners who let them get in such shape.

"They will have to figure it out," Dahill said. "They might give them thirty days to fix it up or remove it before they tear it down and file a lien to get the owner to pay for the removal."

Council members agreed that the assistance from the commission in the much needed project would be appreciated.

Adkins discussed this year's budget, which must be submitted to the state this month.

Adkins said the budget is $140,000 this year, which is up from $131,000 last year. Adkins said taxes on gaming were responsible for most of the extra increase.

"We had about $7,500 in gaming income this past year," Adkins said.

Following discussion the budget was approved.

Councilmembers also discussed the current audit for 2006-2007, 2005-2006 and 2007-2008. The audit began last week.
