OMAR — Get ready, the Marshall University Mobile Medical Unit is coming to town on Thursday, April 16. In an effort to increase the number of women receiving their routine breast and cervical cancer screenings, the Medical Unit will be offering a day of women’s free health screening at the Omar Fire Department located on Rt. 44 in Omar.

Dr. David Jude, an OB/GYN with the Marshall University Department of OB/GYN, will be performing Pap tests, pelvic exams and clinical breast exams from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Cabell Huntington Hospital will also provide screening for osteoporosis and sun damage, and literature on breast and cervical cancer will be available.

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2008 more than 11,000 women were diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer and more than 182,000 women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Don’t be a statistic. The best protection is early detection.

Cervical cancer is nearly 100 percent curable and finding breast cancer in its early stages will allow for more treatment options.

If you are a woman between the ages of 25-64 years old, have no insurance, no Medicaid or no Medicare, you may qualify for free or low-cost services through the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program. A woman with a family of four can have a household income of $42,396 and be eligible for the program.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call the Logan County Health Department at (304) 792-8630.
