Gov. Joe Manchin wants to talk with Logan County residents Thursday morning at a public meeting at 317 Steak House in downtown Logan.

The governor will take time away from the state Legislature to tour Logan County businesses Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. and then will hold the meeting, which is open to the public.

This event is open to the public and the governor encourages individuals to attend.

“Open communication is the key to any successful administration,” Gov. Joe Manchin said. “It is important to speak directly with the residents to hear their concerns and suggestions on how to continue improving our state. Southern West Virginia is such a vital part of our state. We must stay engaged with what is happening in these counties, and there is not a better way to stay connected than to visit area and hear directly from the people. I am eager to spend the morning in Logan County touring businesses and reacting one-on-one fellow West Virginians.”

Logan County Commission President Art Kirkendoll said he's glad Gov. Manchin will be meeting with Logan countians Thursday morning.

"He's taking time away from being at the Legislature. I think it's great that he's coming to Logan to talk with our people," Kirkendoll said.

An official with the governor's office said the impromptu meeting is a rarity, since Manchin usually spends the entire Legislative session in Charleston.

"During the Legislature, the governor does not leave the Capitol very often, so this is important that he get down there," Matt Turner with the governor's office said Tuesday morning. "He does not like to leave, but this is important to him because he wants to visit Logan County."

Sara Payne Scarbro, the governor's press secretary, said Manchin will most likely be in Logan County much of the morning before attending the meeting.

"He'll probably be spending all morning down there," Scarbro said.
