HOLDEN — The Children’s Home Society has little red stockings in many local businesses and schools to help children who call their locations home during the holidays.
Children’s Home Society (CHS) has been in existence since 1896. CHS has 10 shelters across the state. The organization’s first and foremost goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for the children. Second, for the children to know that at least one adult cares about them.
“We meet their basic physical needs, but we try to meet emotional needs as well. We provide a home-like environment as much as we can. Children are encouraged to take part in community, sports or school activities and a member of the staff goes along to support them,” said Case Manager Leigh Hunter.
The Little Red Stocking Campaign began in 1806. Children throughout the neighborhood would put coins in their socks to collect money for the children at the orphanage.
Over two centuries later, the Little Red Stocking Campaign has changed, but the concept is still the same. Now, companies have little red stockings made of paper to sell for $1. The buyer writes his or any name on it and gives it back to be displayed on the walls or windows of the business or organization. The little red stockings can be purchased at many local businesses including One Stops, Go Marts, Little Generals, Hill’s Chiropractic, Dairy Delight, and many local schools.
The Red Stocking Campaign is statewide, but all of the money raised in Logan stays in Logan to support the June Montgomery Harless Children’s Home and the WECAN program in Logan County.
