CHARLESTON — The Tug Valley Panthers kept their state championship hopes alive Thursday night with a 63-46 beating of the Weir Red Riders in the quarterfinals of the Class AA state tournament in Charleston.

Now, the Panthers have the tough task of facing top-seeded Wyoming East, which pounded Scott in the first game, 65-39.

The two teams meet tonight at 7:15 p.m.

Tug got off to a good start with a Channing Preece 3-pointer and cruised to a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Preece scored nine of his team-high 14 points in the first quarter.

The Panthers kept pouring it on Weir, outscoring the Red Riders 15-11 in the second quarter to take a 34-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Tug Valley outpointed Weir 16-12 in the third quarter to take a 50-33 advantage into the fourth quarter and the two teams scored 13 points apiece in the final frame as Tug got the 17-point victory.

“I thought we got off to a good start and we got to play our pace and our tempo and that always helps. I thought for three quarters we played pretty good,” Tug Valley Coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson said. “We kind of got a little ugly there in the fourth quarter. The first five possessions in the fourth quarter we made five turnovers. That kind of takes away from it a little bit. I can see they’re a little frustrated because they want to play perfect. But, all in all, you just survive and advance and we get to play tomorrow.”

Austin Vance and Nathan Brewer each scored 12 points, Michael Evans added nine, Derek Hayes netted eight, Mason Pack chipped in four and Jordan Colegrove and Dustin Maynard each scored two. The big difference in the game was on the boards, as Tug outrebounded Weir, 45-29. Evans led the Panthers with 10 boards, while Brewer grabbed nine, Channing Preece yanked down five and Hayes, Vance and Zach Preece each reeled in three. Maynard grabbed two boards and Colegrove and Rusty Sartin each grabbed one.

“I thought we rebounded well,” Coach Thompson said. “We had 45 rebounds and I think that’s the highest total we’ve had. I think the rebounding was a key to the game.”

Channing Preece also gave five assists, got two steals and blocked one shot. Vance gave five assists, got a steal and blocked a shot. Brewer got three steals, blocked one shot and gave an assist. Mason Pack got two steals and handed off an assist, while Justin Kirk gave an assist.

Weir was led by Shawn Burns with 11 points, while L.J. Campbell added eight and Taylor Collett finished with seven. Tug Valley outscored the Red Riders 28-20 in the paint, 12-9 off second-chance buckets and 8-6 on the fast break. Weir’s bench contributed more points, outscoring Tug’s bench, 11-8. The Panthers shot 42.6 percent inside the 3-point arc, making 23-of-54 attempts. From behind the 3-point line, Tug scored only 5-of-12 attempts. From the charity stripe, TVHS sank 12-of-13 foul shots for 92.3 percent. The Red Riders shot just 29.1 percent, making only 16-of-55 two-point shots. Weir made only 21.7 percent of its 3-point attempts, scoring just 5-of-23. From the foul line, the Red Riders made 9-of-16 free throws for 56.3 percent.

The loss ended Weir’s season with a 15-10 record, while Tug improved to 17-9.

“Wyoming East is the measuring stick for all teams in Double-A,” Coach Thompson said. “Hopefully we can battle and keep it close. Maybe in the fourth quarter we can steal one. There’s just four of us left and I think our kids will come out against Wyoming East and be okay.”
