Logan High School graduate Stevie Browning continues to have a fine freshman season at Division II Fairmont State University.

Browning, a 6-foot-3 guard, is currently fifth on the team in scoring at 10.4 points per contest.

Browning is 28-for-58 from the field for 48.3 percent and is 7-for-19 from 3-point land. He is also 10-for-15 from the free throw line for 66.7 percent and is also averaging 2.7 rebounds a game. Browning also has six assists, seven steals and three blocked shots.

Fairmont State is currently 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the WVIAC heading into this week’s action.

Browning’s best game so far was a 20-point effort on Nov. 10 at home against Ohio Eastern. He poured in 16 points in a game on Nov. 13 at Virginia State.

The Fighting Falcons last played on Dec. 15 at Charleston, winning 71-61 over the Golden Eagles.

Fairmont State shot 54 percent from the floor compared to just 34 for UC. FSU also held a decisive 46-33 advantage on the boards. Charleston managed just 5-of-27 from 3-point range in the game.

The Falcons were led by Isaac Thornton’s double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Isaiah Hill scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and also pulled down eight rebounds. Malik Stith chipped in 14 points and six assists for the Falcons. Brendan Cooper had a team-high eight assists to go with seven points and seven rebounds.

Fairmont State has a big game ahead — on Sunday, Dec. 30 when the Fighting Falcons are scheduled to play at Division I Kent State.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Kent State, a member of the Mid-American Conference, has a rich basketball tradition and history.

The Golden Flashes gained national attention in the 2002 NCAA Tournament by advancing all the way to the Elite Eight as a 10th seed.

Kent State posted 10 consecutive 20-win seasons from 1998-2008 and has appeared five times in the NCAA tourney, winning five MAC titles and eight MAC East Division crowns.

The 2002 Kent State team was led by Trevor Huffman and Antonio Gates, who went on to have a long and distinguished career as a tight end for the NFL’s San Diego Chargers.

The Golden Flashes upset Oklahoma State, No. 2 Alabama and Pittsburgh, before falling to Indiana in the 2002 Elite Eight round.
