MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team got a nice payback win on Saturday night as the Hillbillies won 69-47 over Fayetteville at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.

Man, which improved to 3-8 on the season, had lost to the Pirates just a week ago on the road.

“We got off to a slow start but had a big 30-point second quarter with good pressure defense,” Man coach Harvey Arms said. “We made good decisions passing the ball and took it to the glass.”

The Billies placed three players in double digits in scoring, led by freshman John Thomas Keffer, who had 16 points. Senior Chris Justice had 15 and freshman Jake Adkins netted 13. Erik Files added nine points for Man, while Cayce Mullins had eight, Kenny Joe Adkins four and Mitchell Morris four.

Keffer dished out nine assists as well.

Man was 25-for-69 shooting from the floor for 36.2 percent and was 14-for-27 at the free throw line. The Pirates were just 16-for-52 from the field for 30.7 percent. Fayetteville was a woeful 13-for-37 from the foul line.

Fayetteville was led by Will Dooley, who poured in 14 points. Zack Semple had 12, L.J. White seven and Jake Alton six. Aaron Krise and Tyler McVey tossed in four each.

The Pirates could not take care of the ball as FHS committed 32 turnovers. Man turned it over just 15 times.

Man also had 15 steals but was outrebounded 44-43.

Fayetteville led 20-12 after the first quarter before Man was able to catch fire.

The Billies would go on a 30-9 run in the second quarter and took a 42-29 halftime lead. Justice scored 10 points during the frame, including two 3-pointers. Keffer added eight in the period. Mullins and Adkins had four each.

Fayetteville responded in the third quarter with an 8-0 run, cutting Man’s lead to just 42-37 with 5:57 to go in the period. Dooley hit a 3-pointer and scored another three on an old-fashioned three-point play.

Man answered with a 5-0 run to make it a 10-point game at 47-37 at the 3:36 mark on baskets by Keffer and Adkins.

The Billies then scored the final six points of the third on buckets by Morris and Keffer to take a 55-41 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Man started off the fourth in good fashion with a 3-ball by Files to push the lead to 58-41.

The Billies then put the game away by taking a commanding 20-point lead with five minutes to go in the contest as the score read 62-42.

Man is scheduled to host Class AA Westside on Tuesday night at 7:30.
