MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak on Tuesday night with a 72-60 victory at home over the visiting River View Raiders.
The Hillbillies (4-10) used a balanced attack as four players hit double digits in scoring. Three Man players had double-doubles on the night, led by freshmen Jake Adkins and John Thomas Keffer.
Adkins had 17 points and 10 rebounds while Keffer netted 17 points, dished out 10 assists and had five steals. Cayce Mullins also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. Senior Clay Brumfield finished with 11 points.
“It was the best balanced scoring we have had in a while,” Man coach Harvey Arms said. “We now have to get ready for Greater Beckley Christian, which comes in here on Friday night.”
Man senior Clay Brumfield jump-started the Billies with a bucket and a 3-point basket to make it 5-0 Man. Gage Harvey added a hoop for the Billies to increase the margin to 7-0 with 6:03 to play in the opening period.
River View bounced back to cut the Man deficit to 13-10 at the 3:14 mark on a 3-point goal by Zack Morgan.
Mullins then hit a layup and added two free throws to extend Man’s lead to 17-10 but the Raiders’ Taylor Dehaven then drained two 3-balls to cut the Billies’ advantage to 17-16 at the 1:04 mark.
Man led 21-18 after one quarter of play.
Brumfield then got hot and hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Adkins added a basket as well as the Billies went up 29-22 with 4:33 left in the second stanza.
Tyree Baker hit a behind-the-arc 3 to cut the Man lead to 31-29 with 2:14 left until the halftime break.
The Billies then went on an 8-1 run in the final two minutes of play and took a 39-30 lead into the locker room. Adkins scored five of the eight points for Man.
Man’s Michael Scott Rowe hit a 3-pointer to start the second half, giving the Billies a 12-point lead at 42-30.
Keffer later hit a 3-pointer mid-way into the period to make it 47-36.
The Raiders just wouldn’t go away, however, as they battled back by several baskets by Zach Morgan and Trey Clevenger cutting the margin to just 49-45 heading into the final quarter of play.
River View’s Cameron Roberts hit a floater in the lane for the Raiders to make it a two-point game at 49-47.
Man then went on a 7-0 run to make it 56-47 with 5:56 to go.
The Raiders would have one more run to cut the deficit to 60-56 with 3:31 remaining in the contest after four free throws by Morgan.
However, the Billies would outscore the Raiders 12-4 in the final three minutes of action, led by Mullins, who tallied seven of his 15 points during the span.
Chris Justice added six points for the Billies. Rowe had four and Harvey two.
Morgan led River View with a 23-point effort. Dehaven had 10.
Man was 20-for-26 from the free throw line. The Raiders were 7-for-17.
