According to the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health (WVBPH) between the years from 2001 to 2010, Logan County had 167 reported deaths due to an overdose of prescription drugs.

Aside from the fact someone dies in Logan County every month, or two people some months, abuse of prescription drugs is a factor in many other deaths including murders, automobile accidents, and burglaries. Criminal activity is also heavily impacted by drug abuse.

Nearly every Logan County family or community is affected by drug addiction. The search is on for answers including programs implemented to address medical, law enforcement or educational issues.

The Prevention Is Everyone’s Concern Especially Schools (PIECES) Coalition of Logan hosted a Town Hall Forum on Prescription Drug Abuse on January 28, 2013, at the Buffalo Creek Memorial Library. The event was held to raise awareness and generate discussions about prescription drug abuse issues affecting Logan County.

Jeremy Farley, Chairman of the PIECES Coalition, hopes community forums will help start honest discussions about drug abuse.

“We hope to educate the public and have productive conversations about ways to overcome this prescription drug epidemic. All too often, we want to play the blame game. We want to blame doctors or law enforcement, but in reality, it starts and ends with us. It’s our friends and neighbors that are going to jail or dying. Prescription drug abuse affects people of every education level, every income level and all ages. We need to work together to find a realistic solution because we’re all paying the price.”

This forum was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention; and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau for Behavior Health and Health Facilities.
