The Chapmanville Middle School girls’ basketball team is just one win away from capturing the Black Diamond Conference championship.

CMS advanced to the finals with a 48-13 first-round win last Saturday over Hamlin at Harts and came back to defeat the host Harts Lady Lions 30-28 in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Chapmanville is now scheduled to play Madison Middle School on Saturday at Harts in the championship game. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. The Black Diamond Conference boys’ championship game is set to follow at 4 p.m. The conference cheer championships are set for Saturday at 10 a.m.

Abby Marcum paced CMS in the Hamlin game with a 20-point effort. Lexi Martin followed with 11 points, while Hollie Carter had six, Richelle Thompson four and Taylor Manns three. Alyson Bragg and Kaylee Blair chipped in with two points each.

“We have struggled lately getting started in the first quarter, but not today,” CMS coach Tommy Kirk said. “We came out with some pressure and jumped up 14-3 and never looked back. Hamlin played us hard in both regular season games this year, but today we never let them get going.”

Martin led Chapmanville in the win over Harts as she finished with 14 points. Marucm tossed in nine, while Carter had three and Taylor Manns and Nadia Perry had two each.

Harts was led by Kara Browning’s game-high 21 points. She was followed by Mallorie Mullins, who had three and Kenzie McCann and Baylee Browning, who had two points apiece.

Kirk said it should be a good championship game against the rival Madison RedHawks, which moved on with a 28-24 victory over George Washington.

“You can throw out the won -loss records and egular season games because these games are always played like there is no tomorrow,” he said. “Both teams leave it all on the floor and that’s the way the game should be played. The Black Diamond Conference consists of 10 teams from Boone, Lincoln, Putnam and Logan counties. The conference sponsors championships in football, basketball, softball, baseball, track and cheerleading. All conference players are selected for all sports . This is really a good middle school conference.”
