HEWETT, W.Va. — Freddie Elkins, 72, of Hewett, passed away Friday, February 22, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital at Charleston.
“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” — II Corinthians 5:8
Born September 18, 1940, at Jeffrey, he was a son of Gladys Elkins of Hewett and the late Lucian Elkins.
Additional survivors include his wife, Mary Elkins; daughters, Annette Elkins (Danny) Rogers of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Donna Elkins Craddock of Hewett; son, David Elkins of Cary, N.C.; sister, Freda Dent of Fayetteville, N.C.; six grandchildren, Nicholle (Tim), Jodie, Kayla, Kara, Krista and Dylan, and four great-grandchildren, Lexi, Breanna, Paislea and Daniel.
Freddie graduated from Scott High School in 1959 and was a member of the UMWA. He enjoyed getting together with family and friends every third Saturday in August at the Missouri Fork Reunion. He also enjoyed working on lawnmowers and other things in his garage where several friends would gather to help him. His most recent past time was working at his store, Coal Fields Country Store, at Hewett. Those who knew him admired his intense humor and helpful hands.
Freddie will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, at Spencer Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger McCauley and the Rev. Don Austin (Freddie’s cousin) officiating. Burial will follow in the Elkins Family Cemetery on Missouri Fork of Hewett.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
