At last weekend’s Class AAA state wrestling tournament at Huntington’s Big Sandy Arena, the Logan High School was represented by senior Cody Abbott and junior Chance Ooten.
Both lost twice in the tourney to get eliminated.
Ooten lost by 3-0 and 3-1 scores.
“Both wrestlers competed well and wrestled hard,” Logan coach Jason Davis said. “Cody’s opponents were both great competitors and very experienced wrestlers. His first round opponent Derito from Mussleman placed fifth. Chance had to face tough completion as well. He lost both his matches by 3-0 to Roush of Ripley and 3-1 to Garcia of Martinsburg. Chance nearly forced overtime giving up a late takedown suffering his second loss.”
Despite the defeats Davis said he’s proud of his two athletes for advancing to the state meet.
“I am proud of both Cody and Chance for making it to states. To simply qualify is an accomplishment. State qualifiers are the top four wrestlers in each region of four regions in their respective weight classes,” he said. “I also commend junior Alex Crum and freshman Jordan Oney for their assistance in getting both Cody and Chance prepared for the state tournament last week.”
Abbott finished the season 25-13, while Ooten was 18-10. Senior Dustin Thompson (3-3), junior Alex Crum (28-9) and freshman Jordan Oney (15-14) also competed on the team.
“With three of the five returning wrestlers coming back including two state qualifiers — Crum in 2012 and Ooten in 2013 — the future for Logan High School wrestling looks promising,” Coach Davis said.
