COW CREEK, W.Va. — Ora Melvin Smith, 85, of Cow Creek, went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 4, 2013, at Logan Regional Medical Center.
Born September 25, 1927, at Omar, he was a son of the late Lonnie and Dora Blair Smith. Also preceding him in death was one daughter, Brenda Vinson; two sons-in-law, Billy Vinson and James Messer; two sisters, Mazie Jeffrey and Stella Vandergriff; two brothers-in-law, Alvie “Bill Jack” Jeffrey and Bill Vandergriff; one half-brother, Ronnie Smith, and one grandson Melvin Smith.
Ora was a retired coal miner from W-P Coal Company, a diehard St. Louis Cardinal fan and loved attending New Hope Assembly of God at Switzer. He loved playing the guitar and singing for the Lord, gardening, hunting, fishing, and family gatherings. He was loved by all and will be missed greatly.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 66 years, Emma Jeffrey Smith; seven children, Allie (Linda) Smith, Lonzo (Connie) Smith, Sharon (Larry) Ramey, Rick Smith (fiancée Sharon Belohlevy) and Judy Adams, all of Cow Creek, Emma Lou Messer of McConnell, and Mike (Priscilla) Smith of Verner; 16 grandchildren, Joey (Melody) Smith, Vanessa (Bill) Perry, James (Nancy) Smith, Robbie (Angie) Messer, Loretta (George) Parra, J.D. (Kim) Vinson, Bill Vinson, Becky (Jeremy) Tomblin, Kim (Bo) Varney, David (Mandy) Smith, Cindy Ramey, Larry (Keely) Ramey, Rikki Lynn Smith (fiancé Jordan Evans), Scottie Smith (fiancée Heather Lilly), Shannon (J.L.) Thompson and Nickie Adams, and 20 great-grandchildren, Aaron and Steven Smith, Shane Perry, Michael Messer, Robbie Messer, Alyssa and Anthony Parra, Hannah, Jacob, Emma Vinson, Mandy, Hailiegh, Kayda Vinson, Brandi and Jayla Smith, Brycen and Chloe Tomblin, Lauren and Jake Ramey, Brady Thompson. Ora was blessed to have a lots of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at Collins Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Hicks and Pastor Shane Dennison officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens at Godby.
Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home of Switzer.
