CHARLESTON (AP) — Miki Glenn capped her domination of the Class AA tournament with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Bridgeport beat defending champion Westside 44-27 for its first girls state title Saturday.

Second-seeded Bridgeport (25-2) got that elusive championship after losing to Greenbrier East in Class AAA a year ago.

Glenn averaged nearly 32 points in three tournament games. Most of her points Saturday came at the line. She made 15 of 16 free throws.

For the tournament, she made 51 of 57 free throws, breaking the marks of 34 made and 47 attempts by Summer County’s Jolysa Brown in 2008.

And Glenn’s free-throw percentage of 89 shattered the tournament mark of 74 percent set by Dunbar’s Kelly Crawford in 1980.

Top-seeded Westside (25-2) shot just 20 percent from the floor and was held to its lowest point total of the season. The 27 points were one shy of the lowest scored in a Class AA championship game.

Hope Lester led Westside (25-2) with 13 points on 5 of 16 shooting. She had 11 rebounds, while teammate Megan Endicott had 10 rebounds.

Westside and Bridgeport were 1-2 all season in The Associated Press Class AA poll.

Bridgeport came out strong on Saturday, building leads of 12-5 after the first quarter and 23-11 at halftime.

CHARLESTON (AP) — Griffin Dempsey scored 26 points, Mychal Johnson had a triple-double and St. Joseph earned its record fifth consecutive girls Class A championship with a 73-32 win over St. Marys on Saturday.

It marked the third time in four years that St. Joseph beat St. Marys in the finals.

Top-seeded St. Joseph (25-1) broke the mark of four Class A titles it shared with the Mercer Christian teams that won from 1999-2002. St. Joseph tied the all-classes mark with Summers County, which won five Class AA crowns from 2007-2011.

Johnson had 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Asia Petitte added 18 points for St. Joseph.

Dempsey made seven 3-pointers to break the Class A single-game tournament record of six set by Tucker County’s Alexis Fulton last year. Her 15 3-point attempts also set a tournament mark.

Audra Clark led third-seeded St. Marys (25-2) with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The 41-point margin of victory was the highest ever for a Class A title game, breaking the mark of 38 points set by Mercer Christian against East Hardy in 2000.

St. Marys scored the game’s first basket, but it only got worse from there.

St. Joseph broke open a close game in the second quarter and led 36-15 at halftime and 63-26 after three periods. St. Joseph needed just two points from its bench.

St. Joseph’s defense forced 29 turnovers and limited St. Marys to 26 percent shooting from the floor.

St. Joseph will return its starting lineup intact next season. Four are juniors and Mychelle Johnson is a freshman.
