The spring sports season is scheduled to begin this week for Logan County’s baseball and softball teams.

All teams are slated to see action.

Actually, the season has already gotten under way for at least one team as the Chapmanville Regional High School softball team won 18-0 last Friday in its opener at Mingo Central. The Lady Tigers were 24-6 last season and were ousted 8-3 by eventual Class AA state champion Wayne in the regional semifinals.

The Chapmanville baseball team, which went 20-12 last season and also lost to Wayne in the Class AA regional semifinals, was scheduled to host Sherman on Monday, weather permitting, in its season opener at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Field.

On Tuesday, the Logan High School baseball team was scheduled to have its season opener at Cabell Midland in a 6:30 p.m. contest. Last season, the Wildcats were 21-7 but were upset 3-1 in the Class AAA sectional finals at South Charleston. The loss snapped Logan’s string of 13 straight sectional titles dating back to 2000.

Also on Tuesday, the Logan softball team is slated to have its season opener with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Winfield. The Lady Cats were 28-7 last season and went 1-2 in the state tourney. Logan has reached the state tourney in each of the last four seasons.

The Chapmanville softball team plays at Poca on Tuesday in a 6 p.m. contest.

On Wednesday, the Man High School baseball team has its season opener at home against Charleston Catholic in a 6 p.m. first pitch.

The Logan softball team also plays on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. home game against George Washington.

Then on Thursday, the Chapmanville baseball team is set to travel to Gilbert to take on the Mingo Central Miners in a 6:30 p.m. game.

The Logan softball team hosts South Charleston on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., while the Chapmanville softball team has its home opener against Sissonville at 5:30 p.m.

On the baseball diamond on Friday, Chapmanville hosts Point Pleasant at 7 p.m., Logan goes to Scott for a 7 p.m. game and Man travels to Liberty Raleigh in a 5:30 p.m. contest.

On the softball diamond on Friday, Man has its season opener at 5:30 p.m. at home against Mingo Central. Logan hosts Shady Spring and Chapmanville goes to Sherman in a pair of 5:30 p.m. games.

On Saturday, the Logan baseball team has its home opener at 3 p.m. at Roger Gertz Field against new Class AAA sectional foe St. Albans. The Man baseball team is set to host Fayetteville in a noon home game.

Also on Saturday, the Logan softball team goes to Scott for a noon contest. Chapmanville’s Lady Tigers host Point Pleasant at 1 p.m. and the Man softball team goes to Van for a 1 p.m. game.

It’s going to be a cold start to the spring sports season as temperatures are expected to be in the 40s for the entire week.

* There will also be college baseball in town on Tuesday at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Field as the WVU Tech Golden Bears take on the University of Pikeville in a 7 p.m. ballgame.

WVU Tech (10-14) has on its roster sophomore pitcher Craig Johnson from Chapmanville and freshman pitcher Justin Oney from Logan.
