CHAPMANVILLE — It was a big year for Chapmanville Regional High School senior basketball player Mackenzie Martin.

This is just the icing on the cake.

Martin, Chapmanville’s 6-foot-4 senior forward/center, has been named to play in this summer’s North-South All-Star Basketball Game set for Friday, June 14 at the South Charleston Community Center.

Martin will play for the South All-Stars, which have a 24-6 all-time record against the North since the series resumed in 1983.

The versatile Martin closed out his career as Chapmanville’s all-time leading career scorer as he eclipsed the 1,500-point barrier this season. He had earlier been named first-team all-Cardinal Conference and first-team Class AA all-state as he averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds a game for the Tigers.

“He gets the job done on the floor and off the floor. He’s a good student, he gets good grades and has a very high GPA,” Chapmanville coach Allan Hatcher said of Martin in a recent interview. “He’s been a tremendous role model for our kids in this community. He did such a great job for us and he deserves this.”

Martin led the Tigers to their fourth straight winning season as Chapmanville advanced to the Class AA sectional semifinals before falling to statebound Tolsia.

Martin can do it all on the floor — from hitting a clutch 3-pointer, to posting up and rebounding down on the blocks to even being a help in handling the ball. He could play all five positions on the court.

“That’s what made him so special,” Hatcher said. “That’s why he’s so hard to replace because of his versatility. He averaged a double-double every game. Not many kids can do that.”

The North will have three Division I recruits on its roster, including Nathan Adrian of Morgantown, who has already signed with West Virginia. Martinsburg’s Donte’ Grantham and Hedgesville’s Chris Shields are both expected to go D-I.

On the South side, George Washington’s Luke Eddy is headed to play at Division I Elon, a school in North Carolina.

The South will be coached by GW’s Rick Greene and Buffalo’s Chuck Elkins.

The North has four Class AA first-team all-staters to the South’s three, including Martin.

Leading the North team is head coach Dave Rogers of Martinsburg, who led the Bulldogs to the Class AAA state title.

Playing alongside Martin with the South are a pair of Tug Valley seniors — Austin Brewer and Mikey Newsome. The two led the Panthers to the Class A state championship. Two years ago, Brewer and Newsome led Tug Valley to the Class AA state title.
