According to Mingo County 911 official Paul Miller, the explosion happened around 2 a.m. in the Howard Hollow area of Chattaroy and shook the ground from Chattaroy all the way to Belo near Delbarton.
“This building is about eight miles from Chattaroy and it shook this whole building when it went off,” Miller said.
The Mingo County 911 building is located at the Mingo County Airport in Williamson. Miller said a 911 dispatcher lives about 12 miles away in Belo and it shook his house.
“I don’t have any real details,” Miller said.
There was no word on the cause of the explosion, and state fire marshals were on the scene as of 10 a.m. investigating.
Miller said no other homes were affected by the explosion, but Chattaroy, Delbarton and Lenore fire departments were on the scene to fight the fire.
Miller said Mingo County Emergency Services Director Jarod Fletcher is on the scene in Chattaroy.
“Everybody is still down there on it,” Miller said. “I don’t think anything’s still burning or blowing up. I guess they’re just trying to figure out what happened.”
Mingo County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy James Smith said he had no information on the explosion.
Miller said a gas company and Appalachian Power was also on the scene.
