The Logan-based West Virginia Dream sixth-grade basketball team finished second last weekend at the East Fairmont Shootout.

The team went 5-2 in the tourney, losing both games by two points each.

The West Virginia Dream is a girls’ AAU squad. They currently have a fifth-grade, sixth-grade and seventh-grade players on the team.

The fifth-grade group is coached by Mike Tothe.

The sixth-grade group are coached by current Logan High seniors Hannah Tothe and Jenna Kimler.

The seventh-grade team is coached by Billy Sipple.

“Our goal for our program is to get more local kids involved in playing basketball during the spring and early summer. We hope to be able to field teams in all age groups in the coming years,” Dream organizer Mike Tothe said. “Our sixth-grade team lost in the championship 28-26 to Hoops Dreams of the Fairmont area. Hoops Dreams was one of the best sixth-grade teams I have seen play this year.”

The West Virginia Dream was down 28-25 when Alexis Canterbury was fouled going up for a shot with nine seconds left in the game.

After the foul was called a technical was then issued on a Hoops player resulting in two more shots and the ball.

“We could only convert 1 of 4 free throw attempts to be down two and had the ball,” Mike Tothe said. “On the inbounds we turned it over securing the win for Hoops. Hannah has done a great job with these kids as she is hoping to get into coaching after college.”

Members of the sixth-grade group include Brittney Welch, Alexis Perry, Alexis Canterbury, Maggie Doss, Madison Webb, Haleigh Hughes, Zoe Browning, C.C. Knox and Kayla Toler.
