CHAPMANVILLE – The doctor was in the house on Wednesday afternoon.

Marshall University head football coach Doc Holliday was a part of the Big Green Coaches Caravan tour that made its annual stop at the Logan Country Club at Chapmanville.

“Mike Hamrick’s Vision Campaign took us to first in our conference when it comes to facilities,” Holliday said. “We will have the nicest indoor facility in West Virginia.”

“We made progress a year ago,” Holliday said of his football team.

He talked about the new assistant coaches on his staff that include Thomas Brown, Chuck Heater, Sean Cronin, Adam Fuller, Alex Mirabal and Mike Furrey new to the staff – joining Bill Legg, J.C. Price and Todd Hartley. Hartley is the recruiting coordinator.

Holliday said his staff has done a great job in bringing in some talented recruits.

The Herd coach said he thinks Rakeem Cato, his starting quarterback, will be even better this year. He was one of the top passers statistically in the country last season.

“He has been lifting weights and is up to about 190 pounds,” Holliday said of Cato. “He is more mature and of course he’ll be more experienced.”

Cato, a junior, has started since his freshman season.

Holliday said the Thundering Herd needs to improve on defense and that they will. “We have brought in some good athletes in the secondary,” Holliday said.

“Our offensive line will be the strength of our team,” Holliday added. “We’ll have all three of our running backs returning. I’m really excited about the upcoming season. We open up at home and that is always a good thing.”

He told the group crowded into the Logan Country Club for the luncheon, which was held prior to the golf outing, that he hopes to see the fans come out and support the Herd this season.
