A trio of Logan County players are set to take part in Thursday’s North-South All-Star Softball tripleheader at Buffalo High School.
Man High School’s Summer Sword and Chapmanville Regional High School’s Hanna Wooten and Talya Berry are set to play for the South All-Star team.
The first game is set for 1 p.m. on Thursday. Game 2 will then follow at 2:30 p.m. Game 3, a five-inning game, is then set to be played at 4 p.m.
Activities are scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. with a home run derby, fastest arm (overhand and underhand), 20-yard dash, 60-yard dash, accuracy throw and bunting.
All players will wear the uniform from their high school team.
Sword, Man’s senior catcher, led the Lady Billies to the Class A state tournament for the first time in three years. Sword, who is headed to play at West Virginia State University, led Man to a 20-7 season. The Lady Billies went 0-2 in the state tourney with losses to Moorefield (3-2) and Wheeling Central. Sword was solid both defensively and with the bat in her career at Man.
Berry, Chapmanville’s ace pitcher, was 14-14 for the Lady Tigers this season. She hit a team-best .379 with two home runs and 19 RBI. Wooten, Chapmanville’s senior catcher, hit .342 with a team-high .566 slugging percentage. She clubbed a home run, drove in 19 and had 16 stolen bases, which tied for team-best honors with Caitlin Elkins.
Chapmanville won the Class AA sectional title this season — its fifth straight crown — but were eliminated in the regional semifinal for the second straight year by Wayne and closed out 15-17. Wayne went on to win the state title for the second straight season.
A total of 19 players are on the South All-Star softball roster.
Included are Marshall University signees: Morgan Hutchinson (Lincoln County); Amanda Salmons (Lincoln County); Jessica Watts (Wayne); Morgan Zerkle (Cabell Midland); and Morgan Kelley (Cabell Midland).
Greg Garber of St. Albans High School is the head coach of the South team.
Chapmanville coach Ronnie Ooten said Wooten and Berry were his team leaders this season.
“Talya pitched super down the stretch for us,” Ooten said. “She threw like she was capable of throwing. We played a real good ballgame against Wayne. We just had three errors that broke our backs. We gave up three runs on those errors.”
Ooten said Berry and Wooten have no intentions of playing college softball.
“Talya told me that she isn’t going to play,” Ooten said. “Hanna is going into the military.”
Also on the South All-Star roster are: Sherman third baseman Mackenzie Smith and Scott shortstop Allyson Johnson.
The South lead the all-time series 25-21 with the North.
* As part of the three-week June summer practice period, the Chapmanville softball team is scheduled to have some games this week. On Thursday, at 6:30 p.m., the Lady Tigers are set to scrimmage Logan at home.
