MAN — An atmosphere of serenity permeated when START members gathered for their May 23, 2013 meeting. Geraldine Bunch, a long-time member and vice-president, had passed away earlier in the week.

START president Frank Thompson invited Robert Perry to do the opening prayer. Prayer requests were for Geraldine’s family and for Jean Wintz, START’s secretary, who was in the hospital for open heart surgery.

The decorating committee used multi-colored table coverings, multi-colored placemats, flowered napkins, birdhouses and flowers for table decorations.

After lunch, members celebrating their May birthday were recognized. The birthday celebrants were Nadine Blankenship, Ella Cook, Norma Jean Nelson, Carolyn Rallos and Delores Spears.

During the business session, Alice Harrison gave the treasurer’s report which surprisingly included the receipt of quarterly royalties from the sale of START’s book, “A Step Back in Time, Triadelphia District”. The royalties are indicative that people are still buying copies of the book which was published in 2011.

The president thanked the Friends of the Library for selling tickets to a pancake breakfast at Wendy’s on May 11. The members unanimously voted to donate $250 to the Library to help defray costs with the Library’s August reading program. Also, the president read the “thank you” card from Bruce McDonald United Methodist Church for the donation that START made toward the overhaul of the elevator.

It was announced that memorial flowers would be sent in memory of Geraldine. During the remembrances made by several members during the meeting, one of the many things that Geraldine volunteered to do and loved to do was to ring the bell for the Salvation Army during the Christmas season.

Prior to adjournment, a drawing for door prizes was conducted. The door prize winners were JoAnne Hensley, Lounice Jeffrey, and Pebble Vance.

The 35 members signing the attendance register were Rev. Randy and Judy Sites, Elizabeth Tackett, Gretchen Donahue, Mayor Jim Blevins, Gertie Moore, Pebble Vance, Robert Perry, Paul and Donna Thibault, Laura Hinchman, Arthur and Barbara Brunty, George and Dotty Doczi, Peggy Mosley, Angelina Bassham, Bill and Donna McNeely, Frank and Elaine Thompson, Mae Osborne, Alice Harrison, Barbara Spears, Norma Jean Nelson, JoAnne Hensley, Lou Arnold, Helen Nelson, Merlin and Delores Spears, Alice Ramiscal, Elmer and Lounice Jeffrey, Jane Grimmett and Lessie Bailey.

START’s next meeting will be held at noon on Thursday, June 27, in the fellowship hall of Bruce McDonald United Methodist Church. Annual dues are $24 and membership is open to everyone.
