MAN — “Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the Bunny Trail ...”

He hopped right into START wearing a black hat with large white and pink ears sticking up. A little early for Easter, but START celebrated Easter when they met for their meeting on March 26, 2009.

Emma and Bill Mitchell decorated the tables using tulip baskets filled with colorful eggs, flower arrangements, pink placemats and white table linens. Favors consisted of small ‘Easter bunny boxes’ filled with candies.

START’s confectioner, Zettie Brown, prepared a homemade cake shaped like a cross and topped with small dogwood flowers. She also baked a cake in the shape of a lamb and provided a tray of her delicious chocolate covered peanut butter eggs.

The women did a wonderful job of preparing foods that were appropriate for an Easter buffet feast.

Frank Thompson, START president, opened the meeting by introducing the guests; Rev. Orville Ellis Jr., Sonny Crowder and Jerry Garrett. He then asked Rev. Ellis to give the prayer of thanks.

After enjoying a delicious lunch, Frank introduced the guest speakers, Ellis and Crowder. They work as auditors for the state of West Virginia. Their primary focus during their presentation was to advise the group concerning scams. They cited some examples and cautioned the group to be careful when you receive a phone call offering big payouts but needing your personal information. Their presentations were very informative and helpful.

Thompson announced the recent marriage of Nancy Thompson and Jerry Garrett. Jerry grew up in the Mallory area and has been living in Arkansas for a number of years. The couple is making their home in Landville. Best wishes to this newly married couple.

START members celebrating March birthdays were Lessie Bailey, Zettie Brown, Laura Hinchman, Pauline Jeffrey, Peggy Mosley, Mae Osborne, and Pat White. Alice Harrison played the piano while everyone sang the ‘Happy Birthday’ song.

One of the March birthday celebrants, Laura Hinchman, was inducted into START’s 90th Birthday Hall of Fame. So far, five members have been inducted. To commemorate Laura’s birthday, she received a tee shirt showing the number of days old she is with a notation under the days ‘But who’s counting?’

Prior to the business session, there was a silent prayer in memory of Helen Urganus.

During the business session, Jean Wintz gave the secretary’s report and Alice Harrison gave the treasurer’s report. Thompson gave a status report on the picture history book of Triadelphia District.

Prior to the end of the meeting, a drawing for two door prizes was held. The lucky winners were Maxine Justice and Bertha Allen.

The 47 members and guests signing the attendance register were Jean Wintz, JoAnne Hensley, Geraldine Bunch, Lou Arnold, Wanda Grimmette, Nadine Blankenship, Elmer and Lounice Jeffrey, Barbara Spears, Ella Cook, Sarah Canterbury, Jane Grimmette, Jerry and Nancy Garrett, Bill and Donna McNeely, Alice Harrison, Merlin and Delores Spears, Robert Perry, Helen Nelson, Mae Osborne, W. C. Coyer, Laura Hinchman, Betty Gentry, Bernie Queen, Norma Jean Nelson, Bill and Emma Mitchell, Arthur and Barbara Brunty, Maxine Justice, Connie Elliott, Dr. Rallos, Bertha Allen, Paul and Donna Thibault, Lenora Moss, Shirley and Zettie Brown, Dottie Doczi, Mike and Gretchen Donahue, Rev. Orville Ellis Jr., Sonny Crowder and Frank and Elaine Thompson.

The next meeting will be at noon on Thursday, April 23, 2009, in the Fellowship Hall of Bruce McDonald United Methodist Church. Spring will be the theme for this meeting, and, as flowers begin to bloom, the bees will begin to appear. Mr. Gregg Castle will do a presentation on the importance of bees to our environment.

"START meetings are open to everyone. Please come and join us!" Thompson said. “Our motto is ‘START by becoming a member.’”
