With the game scoreless heading into the home half of the fourth inning, the Lady Billies erupted for four runs and went on to claim the win.
Man, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class A, improved to 10-0 on the season.
Class AAA No. 5 Logan lost for the third time in its last four games and fell to 17-4. The Lady Cats were blanked 1-0 at home by 3A Winfield on Wednesday.
Junior all-state hurler Marlena Frye recorded the win for Man. She struck out 10 batters, walked just one and allowed only four hits.
Logan freshman Morgan Aguirre was the pitcher of rocord for the Lady Cats.
Kaitlan Chapman got things started for Man in the fourth with a walk. Frye then singled and Malorie Vance delivered an RBI double to make it 1-0 Man.
Logan coach Randy Robinette then pulled Aguirre in favor of Taylor Norman, another freshman hurler.
Norman fanned Malorie Keffer but walked Paige Stacy to load up the bases.
Jacyln Dickerson then grounded a ball in the infield and Logan was able to force out Frye at the plate for the second out.
But then Lorin Whited had an RBI single to up the lead to 2-0.
Mercedes Sharp followed with a hard smash to short which scored two more runs to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Logan’s lone run came in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by catcher Britta Aguirre. Logan tried to score two on the hit but Stacy gunned down Kristian Chryssofos at the plate.
“That was big for us ... Stacy getting the runner out at the plate,” Lady Billies’ coach Randy Epperly said.
For Logan, it’s been a tough week.
On Monday, Logan High School senior Brittany Dentro, Lady Cat player Heather Dentro’s sister, was killed in a tragic car accident. The funeral was Thursday afternoon at Nolan in Mingo County.
“It’s been a tough week for us. Our kids are still grieving and the funeral was today,” Coach Robinette said. “We used two freshmen pitchers. We just weren’t ready to play.”
Both teams collected four hits apiece.
Leonnah Browning, Hannah Vinson and Norman added hits for the Lady Cats.
Logan and Man are now scheduled to have a rematch against each other on Saturday at 2 p.m. at LHS. Both teams were slated to play Roane County on Saturday at Logan but the schedule has been changed.
It will now be a makeup game between the Lady Billies and the Lady Cats. The two teams rained out on April 7 at Logan.
Man has now won 18 games in a row dating back to last season with it won the Class A state title.
