GILBERT – The Gilbert Lions baseball team made good use of 11 Burch errors to take a 17-7 win in six innings last night at the Gilbert High School baseball field.

Tanner Grimmett pitched the win for the Lions. He went the complete game on the mound. Keith Hill was tagged with the loss for Burch in six innings.

Following the first game, the Bulldogs and Lions got in two innings of a second contest, but it was called due to heavy rain. Coaches worked the field, but, after about a 30-minute delay, umpires called the game.

Gilbert Coach Walt Cline said the Lions were just glad to finally get to play, after all the rainouts this week.

"It's good just to get to play," Cline said. "This is our first game this week. Every team is in the same boat. I worked the field before I went to school this morning, and then I worked it at lunch just to get one in today. We had to get back on the field."

"We were a little rusty at first where we hadn't played in a week, but, after we shook off the rust there, we played a little better," Cline said.

Burch Assistant Coach Hurston Vinson said the Bulldogs started the game playing well, but errors proved fatal.

"We got behind a little bit, but they came back and worked their way back in the game," Vinson said. "They didn't give up. But, it's like the rest of the year. Errors hurt us."

The Bulldogs, still looking for their first win, are scheduled to play this evening at Matewan, weather permitting.

The Bulldogs will then play Williamson in the first round of the sectional tournament on Monday.

Gilbert (7-7) returns to action Monday at Man in the first game of the sectional tournament against the host Hillbillies.
