WHARNCLIFFE (AP) — Seven workers emerged unharmed from a Mingo County mine Sunday after floodwaters were pumped out that had trapped them underground for about a day.
The miners walked out of Alpha Natural Resources’ Mountaineer Alma mine near Wharncliffe after 6 a.m., said state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management spokesman Robert Jelacic.
Heavy rains inundated the area Friday night and Saturday morning.
The miners had gone to work late Friday night and were exiting the mine Saturday morning when they found they were blocked in, said Ron Wooten, director of the state Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training.
Rescue teams pumped water out of the mine while the miners waited on higher ground. After the water level went down, the miners left the mine, boarded a bus back to the company’s main office and were greeted by relatives and other miners, Wooten said.
