As first reported in The Logan Banner on Wednesday, the Man baseball team was awarded the sectional title after Gilbert reportedly forfeited to the Hillbillies.
The Gilbert area was hit by severe flooding last weekend and the Gilbert High School baseball team was unable to field a team, according to Man High School officials on Wednesday.
But on Thursday morning, Man Athletics Director Bill Clark retracted the information and said that Gilbert High School had not officially forfeited.
Clark, though, said Friday morning that Gilbert will in fact be forfeiting but it's just a matter of paperwork.
The Gilbert baseball team will not be fielding a team for the sectional tourney with Man and the Lions' season is over.
"Gilbert is going to forfeit. The Gilbert baseball coach called and said they will forfeit. They felt the boys were more needed at home instead of playing in a baseball tournament," Clark said.
With the two forfeit wins, Man moves on to the upcoming Class A regional semifinals where the Billies will face a yet to be determined opponent. Man and Gilbert were scheduled to play a best-of-three game series beginning on Monday but with Gilbert hit hard by the heavy rain, flood cleanup has continued all week throughout the area. The Gilbert region was one of the hardest hit areas in southern West Virginia as several inches of rain fell last Friday night and flooded several low areas and creeks.
Man High School's girls' softball team was awarded a forfeit win on Thursday night in the Class A regional semifinals and have advanced to play in the region title game on May 21 at home against Buffalo. The Lady Billies were slated to face off against a Mingo County team but school was cancelled countywide in Mingo this week due to the flooding.
