Getting help from all over

We have been very pleased to see the outpouring of love and help for flood victims in Mingo County this week.

Not only has the National Guard been working tirelessly to clean up after the terrible flooding that happened 10 days ago in southern Mingo County, but also there have been many volunteers coming in from all over the state and country to lend a helping hand.

People have come in from New Jersey, Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina and many other states to help our flood-stricken residents.

The need is great in Mingo County right now, even for basic things like cleaning supplies, water, diapers, dog and cat food, blankets, shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows and other everyday items. We were pleased when Logan County Delegate Ralph Rodighiero and a few of his co-workers from the United Parcel Service (UPS) collected donations at Walmart on Saturday and their delivered more than two trucks full of goods to Varney Grade School, Matewan Town Hall and Burch High School.

Burch High School Baseball Assistant Coach Hurston Vinson was instrumental in the collection and his church, the Toney Christian Fellowship, came over to BHS to help distribute the donations.

There were people from Logan County working alongside people from Lincoln and Boone counties and they all had the same goal: Helping their flooded-out neighbors in Mingo County.

We know the flood victims are very grateful for all the help. And we want to thank the volunteers and those who donated money and much-needed items and those who have donated their time to give flood relief.

The flood victims in Mingo County have a long road ahead of them. But all the help and love they’re seeing from people outside the flooded areas is getting them off to a good start.
