The Wildcats and Hillbillies are each just two wins away from claiming state titles as the pair are scheduled to take part in the state baseball tournament at Charleston’s Appalachian Power Park.
No. 7-ranked Logan (25-8), last year’s Class AA state champs, are set to take part in its first Triple-A state tourney since 2002. The Wildcats are scheduled to face off with No. 6 Martinsburg on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in one of the two 3A state semifinals. No. 1-ranked Nitro, the defending Class AAA state champs, are slated to take on No. 5 John Marshall in the other 3A state semifinal on Thursday night. The two winners meet in the 3A state championship game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Logan is looking for its fifth state title this decade and seventh overall.
The Wildcats were Class AAA state champs in 2000 and 2001 and were state runner-ups in 2002.
Logan was then a Double-A school from 2003-08 and ended up winning 2A state titles in 2005 and 2008.
Man (18-13) is making its first Class A state tournament appearance since 2005 when the Hillbillies lost to Clarksburg Notre Dame in the state semifinals.
Man, the No. 5-ranked Class A team in the state, will open the state tourney on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against No. 2 Weirton Madonna. No. 1 Moorefield and unranked Pocahontas County play each other in the other state semifinal matchup on Friday at 5 p.m. at “The App.” The two winners meet on Saturday around 5 p.m. in the Class A state title game.
Logan has won 10 out of its last 11 games heading into the state tourney.
The Wildcats beat Nicholas County, 10-0, in five innings in the Class AAA Region 3 title game at Summersville last week. Logan had beaten Riverside 9-3 in the Class AAA regional semifinal on May 25 at Logan. Previously, Logan went 3-1 in the 3A sectional tourney to win its 10th straight section title. LHS downed George Washington in the sectionals, 5-3 and 7-1 and beat South Charleston, 8-2. Logan also lost once to GW, 9-7, in the sectionals.
Logan then won all three of its “tune-up” games with victories over Hurricane (7-5), Man (10-0) and Charleston Catholic (13-8).
The 3A state finals could be a marquee matchup between the Wildcats of Logan and the Wildcats of Nitro. The two did not play each other this season as both games were rained out.
Man heads into the state tourney fresh off last Thursday’s 5-3 win at Wahama in the Single-A Region 4 final. Man had previously beaten Matewan, 5-4, at home in the regional semifinal game. Man was awarded two forfeit wins over Gilbert in the Class A sectional tourney when floods in the Gilbert area made the Lions unable to field a team.
Madonna (22-3), led by pitchers George Magnone and Max and Eddie Nogay, should be a formidable foe for the Billies. Madonna beat Williamstown, 8-1, in the regional title game and knocked off Wheeling Central, 9-5 and 4-3 in the sectionals and Cameron, 10-0, in the regional semifinals.
Pocahontas County (14-11) advanced to the state tourney after a 4-2 win over Fayetteville in the Class A regional finals.
Moorefield is 22-6 on the season and made it to state by beating South Harrison, 6-1, in the regional title game.
Likewise, Martinsburg (26-9) will be tough for Logan to beat. The Bulldogs knocked off Elkins, 13-3, in the Class AAA regional championship game. Martinsburg had previously knocked off state power Jefferson, 12-6, in the semifinals. The Bulldogs beat Hedges-ville, 6-1 and 8-6 in the sectional tourney and then went 2-1 in tune-up games with Moorefield and Fairmont before playing in the regional tourney.
Zack Woolcock hit a grand slam for Martinsburg in the win over Elkins. This is the Bulldogs' second straight trip to Charleston.
The loaded Nitro team is 29-4 heading into the state tourney. The Wildcats beat Hurricane, 9-8, in the 3A regional finals. Nitro took two of three to beat St. Albans in the sectional tourney. The Wildcats lost 7-6 in the opener to the Red Dragons before bouncing back to win 12-2 and 5-4. Nitro is coached by Chapmanville High School graduate Steve Pritchard.
John Marshall is 20-4 going into the state tourney after beating Fairmont, 3-2, in the regional title game. John Marshall beat Brooke and Wheeling Park in the sectional tournament.
In the Class AA division, Independence plays Lincoln on Friday at 10 a.m. in the state tourney, while Point Pleasant faces Sissonville in Game 2 in a battle of Cardinal Conference teams. The Double-A state title game is set for Saturday around 2 p.m.
