FEMA officials came to Logan this week to address flood relief for residents of Mingo, Wyoming and McDowell Counties.

Bill Lindsey with the Federal Emergency Management Agency said that, as of Monday, there were 3,171 applications for assistance and more than $6 million had been approved for individual assistance to flood victims.

"We have 22 inspectors in the field who have made over 2,000 inspections,” Lindsey said. “We have five disaster relief centers open in Mingo, Wyoming and McDowell Counties to assist people. We have opened up a mitigation center at Lowe’s, which will assist anyone in the affected counties or anyone who suffered damage. You should feel free to come in and they will advise you on repairing damage to your home, cleaning up and protecting your property from future flooding.”

The schedules for local mitigation centers are as follows:

— Lowe’s in Logan, June 12-14.

— 84 Lumber in Williamson, June 5-7 and June 16-18;

— Lester’s in Iaeger, June 9-11 and June 19-21.

"All the DRCs are really well staffed in the wake of this disaster," Lindsey said. "FEMA aid is grant-based. It is not loans you don't have to pay anything back. Accepting FEMA help does not affect disability payments or income taxes."

Flood victims from Mingo County have receiving healthcare help from an unusual source recently.

Approximately 4,000 homes suffered significant damage or were completely destroyed in Mingo County. More than 120 private bridges were either damaged or destroyed. The county was quickly declared a federal disaster area by President Obama after Gov. Joe Manchin toured the flooded areas a day after the flash flooding hit.
