Many other counties across the state and nation have soccer leagues. They start with the young children and the programs go into the high schools and many soccer players — both girls and boys — can get college scholarships to play soccer on the next level.
We think it's long overdue in Logan County and we hope that people will show interest and rally around the idea.
Just like softball has grown from when Bea Orr first introduced it to Logan County to Logan County producing three state tournament teams and two state champs this year (prompting some Logan Countians at the recent state tournament to refer to our home as the "Softball Capitol of the World), our area could become the next soccer hotspot in West Virginia.
Soccer would be played in the fall and it might appeal to many athletes who don't play football and volleyball and it might give opportunities to kids not involved in those two sports a chance to play a game they enjoy.
Currently, children wanting to play soccer — nearly 100 — have to travel to neighboring counties to play their favorite sport. We hope that will change.
And soon.
We encourage everyone to get behind the idea of a soccer league in Logan County and we hope our school board takes a poll of students to see if there is enough interest to start up soccer programs in schools.
