CHARLESTON — The West Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations is currently investigating a Logan County doctor after a significant amount of drugs were found in his car following a traffic stop and his arrest on unrelated charges.

Dr. Brian McDevitt, 45, of 125 Market Street in Man, was driving in his Lexus UT when he was pulled over by West Virginia State Police troopers B.R. Moore and C.D. Kuhn on Monday after McDevitt allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of State Route 65 and U.S. Route 119 at Belo and almost slammed into the vehicle in front of him.

McDevitt was charged with failure to obey a traffic control devise, reckless driving and obstructing an officer.

On Tuesday after his release from the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden, troopers obtained a warrant to search McDevitt's vehicle, which was impounded at Duba's Tow Company the night before.

During the search, troopers recovered three trash bags of prescription pill bottles filled with phentermine, which is the generic form of Adipex-P and a Schedule 4 controlled substance.

Troopers also recovered $13,631 in cash and multiple checks.

As of press time Thursday morning, no charges in connection with the drugs had been filed against McDevitt, who operates the Chapmanville Medical Center in Chapmanville and the Varney Medical Clinic at Taylorville in Mingo County.

But, WVSP Cpl. Mike Smith with the BCI said Thursday that McDevitt is under investigation.

“He was arrested in Mingo County and there was a search warrant executed on his vehicle,” Cpl. Smith said. “As a result of items that were in his vehicle, we are conducting an investigation into those items. We found some stuff in the vehicle and we’re looking into it.”
