The community awareness ride begun by a local man is being supported by the Kiwanis Club of Logan.

Patty Gilliam's son Jason has gotten involved in the 2009 Bike and Build project which will see bicyclists from across the country riding from one end of the nation to the other to raise awareness and funs for affordable housing efforts.

Bike and Build participants will stop in hundreds of local communities where they will meet with local people and give presentations about housing issues and build homes with local groups.

Gilliam said her son learned about Bike and Build in college and that he was currently in Florida heading towards Mississippi and New Orleans.

"He needs funds to complete the trip and project," Gilliam said. "There are 30 people in his group and they travel four and five apiece to the same destination each evening, at each town they arrive in they stay at a church or camp out.

She noted Jason was involved with AmeriCorps when he lived in Logan.

The club made a $193 donation for Gilliam's project.

• President Diana Barnett noted the Kiwanis Kids Bicycle Safety Rodeo will be coming up soon on August 22 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Thornhills Outlet at the FountainPlace mall.

Barnett said she hopes to have WVOW do a live remote broadcast from the event.

Sponsors are working with the club on the event to provide free bicycle helmets to kids and door prizes such as new bikes.

"I have a list of people who will help," Barnett said.

Participants to the event will get a ticket for a free drink and hot dog.

"We will need lots of help, so volunteers will be recruited," Barnett said.
