Thanks miners!

Editor,

I just wanted to take a minute and say a few words to the coal miners in our area.

First I'd like to say 'Thank You' for risking your lives and because of your efforts I have electricity. Some people want to make a ruckus and shut coal mines down but that would be a horrible mistake!

I wonder how many of those people would like to live without any electricity. Never hear any complaining about all the trees and mountains that get blasted down for new shopping malls do we? Don't go hug a tree: hug a coal miner!

Proud to be a coal miner's daughter,

Kim Lambert

Blair Mountain should be saved as a reminder of how tragic it was for those people back then to be forced to rise up against the establishments because the government chose to turn a blind eye on the crimes that were being committed against its citizens (Scrit for payment=slavery, no unions so if someone felt they were being treated unfairly they would have their entire family kicked out of the home, etc). Let me hear some respones from anyone out there that thinks I am wrong.

Don't jump on the economic bandwagon to try and prove your point! The coal industry has been robbing WV of its natural resources for years (even when the economy was at its best).

If you want to know about a chain reaction think of the chain reaction that would happen if everyone actually took an active role in their children's education and made sure that they all graduated High School with options. Think about the chain reaction that would occur if the counselors in the High Schools actually did their job and sought out the many scholarships that are available to make sure the ones who don't have rich mommy's and daddy's can get an opportunity at reaching higher educational goals.

As far as your shopping center goes, I could care less about the Wal Mart center but I do know that it has provided many jobs in Logan and has even given planty of the young places to go for work. Logging, well when logging is done correctly it actually helps the environment by clearing out the old trees and allowing the smaller ones to get the sunlight in order to grow. It is when they go in and destroy the lanscape is when they cross over into the wrong side.

Last but not least I want to address your first question about if I know how expensive it will be to us wind mills and solar panels. It can't be more expensive than the cost of our mountains. Once the mountains are gone then they will be gone. We have already lost too much and those who have been in charge of these scams will only go to the next mountain over and continue their sin. Did you read how they are taking Blair Mountain off of the historical site list. You do realize that politicians have most likely got with coal/strip mine owners and agreed to take Blair Mountain off of the list so that the coal/strip mine owners can finally rape that side of the earth next. Blair Mountain was the only site in the US where US Soldiers were actually called out to put down it's own citiznes. Airplanes were even used to drop bombs on the people on the ground. What is not historic about that?

The government spends a billion dollars a day on things that are not needed so if they would just be willing to give a small percentage of that to things such as energy saving tools such a windmills, solar panels and other fuels we may be able to save our mountains, wildlife and environment for generations to come. But what will most likely happen is nothing but the same because politicains, coal/strip mine owners, you and so many more only care about yourself and just want to ensure that you have a job for the moment. You don't think about what will happen when it is all gone or how your gradchildren will fare in WV without Coal (after it is gone). I hope you can guarantee them a great education because without it, if the coal runs out it will only be pills and the military for the ones in Logan that can't afford college. And that is only if the military will take them!

here's a question for you fed up: do you have any idea how expensive it would be to use 'alternative' energy sources (wind mills, solar panels)? our country is already so far deep in debt so please enlighten me where would the money come from to produce 100% electricity without any type of coal used? and lets not forget the chain reaction that would be caused if all coal mines were shut down. do you throw a fit when mountains are blasted down and destroyed to build a new shopping center? what about the logging industry? they cut down the trees but only hear it blamed on coal mining. hmmm.

Kim,

The coal mines do not care about you. Never have and never will. They only care about the resource that they are pulling from the earth. When the resource runs out you will be singing a different tune because the mine owners will pull pitch and run with you and your family wondering where your next meal is coming from. Another news flash for you, coal isn't the only way to get electricity. There is no such thing as clean coal and the owners of the strip mines are raping the mountains and leaving nothing but devastation in their paths. The areas look good from a distance but when you realize that they have removed 400 feet from the mountain down to pure rock you have to realize that you will never see an oak or a beechnut tree ever again from that spot. The only reason you see greenery is because they spread 4 inches of dirt over the rock and plant scrub grass because it grows quickly and erases the terrible moonlike appearance that normally follows the destruction. Educate you children so they will not have to settle for those jobs. Stop sugar-coating the nonsense and take the time to actually look past the smoking mirror. Those people are not your friends.
