DANVILLE, W.Va. — Thomas Franklin Elkins Sr., 68, of Danville, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, July 16, 2009, after a long battle with lung disease.

Born April 9, 1941, in Logan County, he was a son of the late Ben and Ruth Mae Elkins. Also preceding him in death was one son, Kevin Elkins; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Thomas was a disabled and retired coal miner from Westmoreland Coal Company and a member of the UMWA and the Lick Creek Community Church.

Survivors include one son, Tom (Lara) Elkins Jr. of Danville; sisters, June Socausky of Tampa, Fla., Carnesia Sargent of Logan, and Janice Covert of Danville; brother, Robert “Bob” Elkins of Waynesboro, Pa.; two grandchildren, Kevin “Tyler” Elkins and Brandon Thomas Elkins of Danville, and a host of nieces, nephews, and wonderful close friends.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 20, at the Handley Funeral Home at Danville with David May officiating. Burial will follow in Family Gardens at Madison.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
