WHARNCLIFFE (AP) — A state official says one person remains trapped in a building that was struck by a derailed coal train at an Alpha Natural Resources’ coal prep plant in Wharncliffe.

Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training spokeswoman Jama Jarrett says a second person was extricated with minor injuries after the accident occurred just before 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Jarrett says the Norfolk Southern train derailed as it headed into the loading facility at the Black Bear Preparation Plant, which is operated by a subsidiary of Abingdon, Va.-based Alpha. Jarrett says both victims work at the plant.

Representatives of Alpha, Norfolk Southern and the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration did not immediately return telephone messages seeking comment.

Wharncliffe is a small community near Gilbert in Mingo County.
