SUMMERSVILLE – Hedgesville hit two home runs – including a grand slam – to beat Chapmanville 5-3 on Saturday afternoon on the first day of the 11-12-year-old State Little League Baseball Tournament at Summersville’s Veterans Memorial Park.

Tied 1-1, Hedgesville’s Matt Frye hit a pinch-hit, grand slam homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to put his team up 5-1.

Tyler Anders had earlier tied it 1-1 with a solo blast in the bottom of the second.

Chapmanville led 1-0 in the top of the second when Adam Dingess walked and later scored on an error by Hedgesville. It was one of four errors committed on the day by Hedgesville.

Hedgesville one had three hits for the day off Chapmanville starting pitcher Austin Ellis, who struck out six batters over five innings.

Chapmanville looked to rally late in the game.

In the top of the fifth, Ellis drew a bases loaded walk to force in one run. Brent Bigley then knocked in another run with a bases loaded fielder’s choice play to cut the deficit to 5-3.

In the top of the sixth, Chapmanville loaded the bases but Hedgesville was able to get out of the jam to close out the win.

Hedgesville used four pitchers in the game. Anthony Sneska started and went two innings. He was relieved by Hunter Knight in the third, Anders in the fifth and Frye in the sixth.

Chapmanville, which dropped to 5-1 in all-star action on the summer, only had two hits for the game – singles by brothers Trey Dalton and Brock Dalton. Hedgesville improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in state play.

Chapmanville, making its second straight trip to the 11-12 state tourney, returns to action Sunday at 6 p.m. against Bluefield. Pool play concludes on Monday with a 2 p.m. contest against Hurricane, the defending state champs.

The Logan 11-12-year-old Little League All-Stars were scheduled to open play in the state tournament late Saturday afternoon against Ripley.

The game was scoreless in the bottom of the second inning but was delayed by more than two hours due to rain and lightning.

No final score or statistics were available as of presstime on Saturday night.

Z. Minnick was pitching for the Logan All-Stars.

Logan is scheduled to see action again in the state tournament on Sunday at 4 p.m. against Ceredo-Kenova. On Monday, Logan plays Elkins at 6 p.m. to finish off pool play.
