KISTLER — Next month, the victims of the Buffalo Creek disaster will be remembered when a road is renamed in their memory.

The current Buffalo Creek Road will be renamed the Buffalo Creek Memorial Highway on August 9 at 2 p.m. in a ceremony that will take place at the Buffalo Creek Memorial site at Kistler, according to Elizabeth Tackett, librarian for the Buffalo Creek Memorial Library.

Tackett said Logan County Delegate Greg Butcher will read a resolution changing the name of the roadway to honor those lives lost in the Buffalo Creek flood.

Tackett said other dignitaries have been invited to the event, as well. She said two signs will be erected in the area to show the highway’s new name.

More than 120 lives were lost in the Buffalo Creek disaster, which happened the morning of February 26. 1972, when 132 million gallons of black coal mine waste water burst open Buffalo Mining’s earthen dam and flooded Buffalo Creek and its communities.
