CHARLESTON (AP) — The trial of a former West Virginia lawmaker accused of using his legislative position to protect his business has been delayed until Jan. 5.

Joe Ferrell of Chapmanville was scheduled to stand trial Aug. 24. His attorneys requested the delay on July 20, saying they need more time to review discovery material that includes more than 65,000 pages of documents and 85 recordings.

U.S. District Judge John T. Copenhaver approved the request Tuesday. Copenhaver noted that those numbers have increased to 85,000 pages and 90 recordings.

Ferrell and his company, Southern Amusement Co. of Logan, were indicted June 8 on 48 counts that include racketeering, illegal gambling and the bribing of a Lottery inspector.
