That’s what the officials of the West Virginia State Junior League Championship are wanting.
After several delays and teams being stuck in a hotel for most of the week due to rainouts, today, the Junior League State Championship show must go on, according to Logan High School Baseball Coach Roger Gertz, who is in charge of Roger Gertz Field at Logan High.
“We have battled rain all week,” Gertz said this morning. “This is the worst I’ve seen it in 30 years of coaching. The field is totally saturated, but we have to play. We’re playing regardless.”
Gertz said crews from the Logan County Commission have been tirelessly working the field trying to get it ready for games to resume this morning.
“We’ve used 20 tons of sand and about 200 bags of field dry and Turface and the crew from the county commission has busted their tails working on the field. I don’t know what we would have done without them,” Gertz said. “We used all Logan High School had and the middle school has given us some bags. But, these teams have to be in Georgia tomorrow night, so they have to try to get it all in today.”
The finals of the tournament could be played as late as 10 a.m. Friday, although, with a rainless day, the championship game could be played tonight, Gertz said.
“Mullens and Fayetteville have forfeited,” Gertz said. “So, we’re now in the elimination round.”
At 11 a.m. today, Hurricane is scheduled to play Hedgesville. Then, at 1:30 p.m., Cross Lanes-Nitro is scheduled to play Wayne.
At 4 p.m., the winner of the first game will play Grant County. At 6:30 p.m., Logan plays the winner of the Cross Lanes-Nitro vs. Wayne game.
The winner of the two semifinal games then would move into the championship round, which could be played as early as tonight.
The state champion will then travel to Georgia Friday to get ready to play in the Junior League Southern Regional against Virginia at 1 p.m. Saturday, Gertz said.
