Logan juniors take state title

They did it.

The Logan 13-14-year-old Little League Junior All-Stars won the Junior League State Championship with Friday’s 6-4 win over Grant County in the finals at Logan High School’s Roger Gertz Field. The Logan All-Stars left immediately following the game for Cartersville, Ga., where it was scheduled to take on the Virginia state champs on Saturday afternoon in the first game of the Southeastern Regional Tournament.

Matthew Greene went 4-for-5 at the plate with two singles, a double, a triple and three RBI to lead Logan’s hitting attack against Grant County.

Tyler Norman added a double and two RBI in the victory.

Grant County jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning before Logan was able to rally.

Logan plated two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to go on top 4-3. Norman’s RBI double put Logan over the top for good.

Greene later added a triple to push the advantage to 5-3.

Grant County was able to cut it to 5-4 with a lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning

Greene’s RBI double then made it 6-4.

Greene was Logan’s starting pitcher. He went four innings and allowed three runs while striking out two. Cody Frye came into the game in the fifth to record the win. He hurled three innings and gave up two runs and three hits with three strikeouts.

Trent Dalton and Alex Lakatos added singles for Logan.

Jesse Earle had two hits to lead Grant County.

Logan had advanced to the state title game with Thursday’s 5-2 victory over Cross Lanes-Nitro. The Logan All-Stars plated three runs in the last half of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie.

Dalton got the win in relief for Logan.

Greene led Logan’s bats as he had two hits.

On Saturday, Logan began play in the Southeastern Regional tourney in Georgia but lost 5-2 to Virginia. The locals are scheduled to continue pool play on Sunday and Monday.
