Police make unusual arrests

WEST LOGAN — Local law enforcement officers arrested an accused peeping Tom recently who reportedly was arrested in several other states on a variety of unusual charges.

Barton Read Smith, 38, of Transient Loveland Colorado, was arrested in Logan County by Tpr. T.D. Boggs of the West Virginia State Police for trespassing, obstructing and giving false information to a police officer on Aug. 12. According to police reports the trooper was dispatched to the West Logan Speedway in reference to a suspicious person.

"Upon arrival, the undersigned officer was advised by several employees that the defendant, Barton Smith had been asked by Cpl. Collins and Cpl. R.L. Frye to leave the store along with the manager of Speedway," the report states. "The undersigned officer was advised by a witness that the defendant had been seen looking through several houses in the local area. The undesigned officer then asked the defendant about his name and personal (information) which the defendant refused to (reply). The defendant also lied to the undersigned officer about being asked to leave by troopers and employees of Speedway."

Smith reportedly refused to tell the officers where he was from initially and when a background check was obtained the WVSP found that Smith had been arrested in several other states on unusual charges, Logan Magistrate Dwight Williamson confirmed.

He was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden at 3 a.m.

• Todd Allen Drake, 22, of Clothier, was arrested in Logan County by Tpr. P.J. Dick of the WVSP for public intoxication and disrupting a government process on Aug. 3. According to police reports Tpr. Dick was attending a hearing in Logan Magistrate Court when he was notified that a young man had passed out on the steps.

"This officer woke the male up," the report states. "The odor of an alcoholic beverage was emitting from his person and breath. His eyes were also bloodshot and glassy and he stated that he had consumed alcoholic beverages."

He was booked at the regional jail at 4 p.m.

• Tommy Lee Salyers, 24, of Mallory, was arrested in Logan County by the Tpr. T.D. Boggs for malicious assault and wounding on July 17. According to police reports the officer received a call through Logan 911 about malicious wounding in the community of Mallory.

"The defendant, punched the victim...several times while kicking him in the ribs," the report states, adding that the officer observed the bruises on the victim's face.

He was booked at the regional jail at 11:45 p.m.
