Mayor Darren Akers and Town Clerk Kristi Adkins said the town had lost a lot of money on its garbage service in July.
"Between the ($6,000) repair bill, the towing bill and rentals, we were out a lot of money," Adkins explained.
Mayor Akers said the tipping fees at the dump had also increased leading the council to discuss the possibility of rate increases for the city's garbage service.
"We don't make any profit off garbage service. It's a service we try to provide at low cost," Akers said. "We don't want to make any profit off of it, we just want to break even on it."
Akers said the town has around 200 residential customers on its garbage route.
Akers, Adkins and West Logan Police Chief Robert Ward discussed the possibility of trying to get a new dump truck either through a grant or through state surplus.
Adkins told town council members the town had other unusual expenses in July, including printing fees, office supplies and a worker's compensation audit.
Councilmembers discussed another problem — lights being out in the Peach Creek area.
Chief Ward said the Department of Highways was trying to shirk its' responsibilities in switching out the lights by claiming its the city's duty to change them when they go out. Ward noted that the DOH may have confused West Logan with Logan, where the fire department uses its ladder truck to change lights.
West Logan has no fire department or vehicle to use to change out the lights, which are technically outside of city limits on a state roadway, Ward said.
"We don't have anything to do with those lights," Mayor Akers said.
Akers said he and Chief Ward would contact the Department of Highways again on Tuesday about the matter.
Chief Ward said there had been a robbery on first avenue when a thief broke into a residence and stole money and other items. Ward said one possible suspect for the crime already has a warrant out for his arrest on other matters.
Ward said the Mountain Trail Inn is under new management and that the new manager seemed to be cleaning the place up. Ward said the hotel was getting a makeover, as well.
Councilmembers expressed optimism about the news and their hopes that the facility returns to the shape it was in during it's heyday.
Mayor Akers said a dispute over right of way and private property that has dogged the council for months may have to be settled in court by the two complainants, leaving the town out of their disagreement.
Akers said that even though both sides were upset at the town it was not a town issue when it involves private property and an abandoned road that was technically state property.
The matter began several months ago when a local man bought some abandoned property that he could not access by the road as another resident owned an old garage that was blocking the road. Ironically, the garage appears to be falling in. The woman who owned the garage refused to have it torn down or moved and the property owner approached town hall.
Council approved a pay raise for Police Chief Robert Ward. Councilman Mark Mareske and Mayor Akers thanked Ward for his years of service to the city.
Council discussed local businesses which are behind in paying their Business and Occupation taxes.
Council members discussed complaints about stray and dangerous dogs.
