When the high school girls’ volleyball season gets under way on Thursday there will be a new coach in Logan County to lead the Chapmanville Regional High School Lady Tigers.
Angie Willis, the mother of former CRHS volleyball player Cortney Willis, will debut as the Chapmanville coach on Thursday as the Lady Tigers play a county tri-match at Logan against the host Lady Cats and Man.
Willis is also the mother to former Chapmanville girls’ basketball standout Kara Willis. Her daughter Cortney also played hoops for the Lady Tigers.
“I think that we can compete but we'll have to work really hard and we'll have to figure out who is going to play what position,” Willis said in an earlier interview. “I think we'll win some games and we'll probably lose some, too, but our goal is to make it to regionals.”
The Lady Tigers will be looking to bounce back from last year's 9-18-1 record. Chapmanville was eliminated three games to none by Wayne in last year's sectionals.
CRHS struggled down the stretch last season, going 0-6-1 in its last seven matches.
Chapmanville will have its home opener on Sept. 8 with a tri-match against Sherman and Burch.
The Lady Tigers then play at Point Pleasant on Sept. 10 before hosting Sissonville on Sept. 15.
On Sept. 17, CRHS plays at Herbert Hoover in a tri-match against the Huskies and Charleston Catholic.
Chapmanville then has another scheduled tri-match on Sept. 21 at home against Tolsia and Williamson.
The Lady Tigers follow with a Sept. 22 home tri-match against Wyoming East and Wayne before going to Tug Valley on Sept. 24.
CRHS then has an away tri-match on Oct. 1 at Tolsia against the host Lady Rebels and Lawrence County (Ky.).
On Oct. 6, Chapmanville is scheduled to face homestanding Poca and Point Pleasant in a league tri-match before going to Man on Oct. 7.
The Lady Tigers host Logan and Point Pleasant on Oct. 8 in a home tri-match, then play at Williamson on Oct. 12 and at Sissonville on Oct. 13.
Chapmanville hosts Herbert Hoover and Poca on Oct. 15 in a Cardinal Conference tri-match, then goes to Burch on Oct. 19 before hosting Man on Oct. 20.
The Lady Tigers play at Wayne on Oct. 22, go to the Wyoming East tournament on Oct. 24, play at Sherman on Oct. 27 in a tri-match with the host Tide and Burch, and close out the regular season on Oct. 29 at home against Tug Valley.
n Man High School’s volleyball team, coached by Orlando Washington, open Thursday at Logan, then host Buffalo and Wyoming East on Sept. 8 in a tri-match.
The Lady Billies, play a tri-match on Sept. 9 at Poca against the host Lady Dots and Nitro before hosting Gilbert on Sept. 14 and going to Lincoln County on Sept. 15. Man plays at Tug Valley on Sept. 17 and goes to Westside on Sept. 19.
On Sept. 24, Man plays in a quad-match at Charleston Catholic against the host Irish, Teays Valley Christian and Calvary Baptist.
The Lady Billies go to Westside on Sept. 28 and then host Lincoln County on Sept. 29 and then host Tug Valley on Oct. 1.
Man plays at Buffalo on Oct. 6, hosts Chapmanville on Oct. 7, goes to Wyoming East on Oct. 12 and plays host to Poca on Oct. 14.
Man follows with a home match on Oct. 19 against Huntington St. Joe, then plays at county rival Chapmanville on Oct. 20. The Lady Billies go to Gilbert on Oct. 26, hosts Westside on Oct. 27 and hosts county rival Logan on Oct. 29 in the regular season finale.
Logan High School, coached by second-year mentor Ernistine Conn, opens with Thursday’s county tri-meet, then goes to Lincoln County on Sept. 8, before playing at Tug Valley on Sept. 10 and at Wyoming East on Sept. 14.
Logan hosts George Washington on Sept. 15, hosts Burch on Sept. 17, plays at Westside on Sept. 19, then hosts Westside on Sept. 21.
The Lady Cats play on Sept. 29 at the St. Albans tri-meet, host Wyoming East on Oct. 5, play at GW on Oct. 6 and then go to county rival Chapmanville on Oct. 8 to play the host Lady Tigers and Point Pleasant.
Logan goes to Burch on Oct. 12, hosts St. Albans on Oct. 13, hosts Lincoln County on Oct. 15, goes to Herbert Hoover on Oct. 20, then hosts Tug Valley on Oct. 27 and then Man on Oct. 29 in the finale.
