The Matewan Depot restaurant, which closed earlier in the summer after several years in business in downtown Matewan, reopened this morning under new owners and a new name.
The Hatfield-McCoy Depot opened this morning at 7 a.m. in the space formerly occupied by the Matewan Depot, according to J.T. Bevins, who co-owns the restaurant with his wife, Lisa Bevins and in-laws Gary and Judy Kinder. They also own Little G’s Pizza in Red Jacket.
J.T. Bevins said the family wants to provide a good, sit-down restaurant for the people of the Matewan communities and the Hatfield-McCoy Trail riders who travel in and out of the small town.
“We leased the building from Pat Garland and put everything in it,” J.T. Bevins said. “We wanted to give people a place where they can sit down and enjoy a good meal in a family atmosphere. It’s going to be a wholesome place for the community and the trail riders.”
The restaurant had been in operation under the ownership of Donna (May) Booth for several years until early July, when she closed the restaurant. Booth said she closed the Matewan Depot due to flooding in May when flash floods washed through much of Mingo County. The Matewan Depot restaurant opened during the mid-1990s when the historical town of Matewan underwent renovation to restore it to a more historical look with storefronts resembling those of the early 1900s.
Matewan is the site of the Matewan Massacre battle between union miners and town law officers and Baldwin Felts detectives and guards. The labor war also spread to Logan County and sparked the infamous Battle of Blair Mountain.
J.T. Bevins said the restaurant will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
