DELBARTON – The Gilbert Lady Lions got two big wins in a tri-match last night at Burch High School in Delbarton.

The Lady Lions beat Burch in two sets, 25-14 and 25-14, then beat Matewan, 25-19 and 27-17 in two sets.

Burch then beat Matewan, 25-16 and 25-16 in the finale.

Gilbert Coach Don Taylor said his team got sluggish against Matewan after a good win over Burch.

“We served well and finished well against Burch,” Taylor said. “When we set it up so we can spike the ball, we're in pretty good shape.”

The wins improved Gilbert's record to 3-1. Matewan remains winless.

Burch improved to 2-8.

“The first game against Gilbert, we stood around and didn't do much at all,” Burch Coach Jan Cisco said. “We have to move. I know this is a new team, but they have to get into position to hit the ball. They need to come out of their shells and play volleyball. Against Matewan, we were more focused than we have been and we played better. They played hard, got their serves in and they're hitting the ball and doing what they were supposed to do.”

Cisco said Ashley Farley, Megan Vinson and Kaitlyn Lester all played well.

“But, they all did a good job,” Cisco said. “I sub in 11 or 12 girls and they all put forth a good effort in this game.”

Matewan Coach Clay Moore said his girls didn't communicate well with each other but he was pleased with the young team's play.

“I've got a sophomore, Whitney Horton and this is the first year she ever played and she is going to be able to fire that ball over,” Moore said. “We're going to come around. Right now, I'm playing three freshmen, so just as soon as I can get these freshmen to where they can hit the ball, we'll start looking a lot better. We'll be able to serve the ball and volley.”

Moore said the Lady Tigers have several girls currently getting ready to play for his team.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action Thursday at home hosting Class AAA Logan in a 6 p.m. game.

Gilbert returns to action also on Thursday hosting Iaeger. Matewan plays at home against Big Creek at the Tigerdome.
