A Logan County Health Department representative says people should not panic over the swine flu.

Nurse Sherrie Adams said on Friday that many people are panicking because they fear the H1N1 virus, which is better known as swine flu.

But, she said, there is no need to get so alarmed.

“People are panicked and I understand that,” Adams said. “Just use general health precautions. We will be getting the word out there when the vaccine becomes available. There will be target groups for the swine flu vaccines. Children area target group because that is the age group that they’re seeing a lot of it in.”

Adams said one thing people can do to stop the spread of the virus is to stay home if you’ve got it.

“Until the vaccine is available, they need to stay home and protect yourself,” Adams said. “That’s the message we’re trying to get out.”

Swine flu, Adams said, is a new strain of influenza that people aren’t immune to. She said people die from the regular flu each year.

“But, it’s scary to people,” Adams said. “The difference with the swine flu is that it does seem to be hitting younger people. Typically, with the flu, people over 65 are a big risk factor. With the swine flu, the older population isn’t as much at risk of getting it as younger people.”

Adams said there were no new confirmed cases of swine flu in Logan County as of Friday. There are seven confirmed cases of swine flu in Logan County, she said.
