CHARLESTON (AP) — A West Virginia woman may avoid the federal death penalty by pleading guilty to a conspiracy charge in the murder of a drug informant.

Valerie Friend is scheduled to admit to a cocaine conspiracy charge Thursday that says she shot and helped kill 33-year-old Carla Collins in 2005.

The felony count, filed Tuesday, alleges Collins was murdered to protect a Mingo County drug operation on orders from ringleader George Lecco.

Lecco and Friend have been facing a lengthy federal indictment in the case. It includes charges that carry the death penalty.

The pair was found guilty in 2007, but won a new trial because of a juror’s misconduct.

Each is blaming the other for the murder, and was granted a separate retrial. Friend’s had been set for late October. Both remain jailed.
